Beyond Jacó: 6 Beaches To Discover Along Costa Rica’s Central Pacific

THE PACIFIC HAS MORE THAN ONE RHYTHM.

One of the pleasures of living in Jacó is that “the beach” never has to mean only one beach.

The Central Pacific changes character quickly. A protected bay can give way to a powerful surf break. Pale sand can appear beyond dense vegetation. Longer stretches of open coast become quieter as you move away from the city.

These are not six beaches competing to be “the best.”

They are six different ways to spend a day by the Pacific.

1. PLAYA HERRADURA — THE PROTECTED BAY

Just north of Jacó, Herradura curves around a bay framed by tropical hills. Visit Costa Rica notes that the shoreline takes its name from its horseshoe shape. At the northern side of the bay sits Los Sueños Marina, bringing boating and sport-fishing culture into the landscape.

Herradura feels more sheltered than the exposed beaches farther south and introduces a calmer, marina-oriented side of Central Pacific life.

2. PLAYA HERMOSA — THE SURF COAST

South of Jacó, Hermosa opens directly to the Pacific.

Visit Costa Rica describes it as a long, approximately 10-kilometer open-ocean beach with strong, continuous waves and a recognized surf identity. The atmosphere is rawer: dark sand, open horizon and the constant energy of swell.

This is not the beach to treat casually in the water. It is the beach to respect, watch and—if experienced—surf.

3. PLAYA MANTAS — A SHELTERED ESCAPE

At Punta Leona, Playa Mantas sits within a private biological-preserve landscape. Visit Costa Rica describes it as one of two neighboring beaches particularly suited to swimming, sunbathing and walking.

Its protected setting offers a striking contrast to Hermosa’s open-ocean energy.

4. PLAYA BLANCA — A BRIGHTER PACIFIC PALETTE

Beside Mantas, Playa Blanca is the more visually dramatic cove: pale sand, tropical green and clear coastal color.

The two beaches are close geographically but feel distinct enough to make Punta Leona a destination in itself.

5. ESTERILLOS — LONGER, QUIETER HORIZONS

Farther south, Esterillos stretches approximately 6.8 kilometers and is divided into Este and Oeste. The shoreline is broad, the surf remains consistent and the overall character becomes less urban.

It is the kind of coast that invites longer walks and fewer plans.

6. BEJUCO — THE UNHURRIED COAST

South of Esterillos Este, Bejuco continues the open Pacific rhythm. It is associated with walking, fishing, horseback riding and slower beach days.

Here the appeal is less about a landmark and more about space.

JACÓ AS THE HOME BASE

This variety is one reason Jacó works differently from a remote beach enclave.

The city can be home while the coastline remains an ongoing discovery. Herradura for a marina morning. Hermosa when the swell calls. Mantas or Blanca for a different water experience. Esterillos or Bejuco when the mood is simply more horizon and less activity.
